TECHNICIAN CLASS
What is a Technician Class License?
The Technician Class license is the entry-level amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission. It allows you to operate on VHF and UHF frequencies, making it ideal for communicating through repeaters, joining local nets, and staying connected during events or emergencies. Technicians also receive limited privileges on select HF bands, giving a small introduction to long-distance (DX) communication. It’s the most common starting point in amateur radio and requires passing a 35-question multiple-choice exam covering basic radio theory, regulations, and operating practices.

What is a General Class License?
The General Class license is the intermediate level issued by the Federal Communications Commission and greatly expands your operating privileges, especially on HF bands used for long-distance communication around the world. With a General license, operators can regularly make contacts across the country and internationally, opening the door to DXing, contesting, and more advanced operating. Earning it requires passing a 35-question multiple-choice exam that builds on Technician-level knowledge and places a deeper focus on operating practices, propagation, and radio theory.

What is an Amateur Extra Class License?
The Amateur Extra Class license is the highest level of amateur radio licensing from the Federal Communications Commission, granting full access to all amateur frequency bands and modes. Extra Class operators have access to exclusive portions of the HF bands, often preferred for DXing and high-level operating activities. This license represents a deeper understanding of electronics, advanced radio theory, and regulations, and requires passing a 50-question multiple-choice exam. It’s the top tier for those who want complete access and flexibility within amateur radio.
